If you are interested with turtles and want to be involved directly on their conservation, come to Paloh Beach, West Kalimantan. Paloh Beach, located in Sambas Regency, is the longest turtle nesting beach in Indonesia (around 63 km is used for turtle nesting).

There are four species of turtles found here: Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas), Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricate), Leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), and Lekang Turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea). Those species are being protected by the laws in Indonesia.

The Paloh turtle conservation program has been carried out by the WWF-Indonesia since 2009. The program began with monitoring and data collection to determine the population and threats. Each year, the WWF-Indonesia, the Department of Fisheries and Marine Affairs, and various organizations including Scouts organize the Annual Coastal Festival called “Festival Pesisir Paloh”, which has been celebrated from 2012. Now, visitors can come and participate in releasing the hatchlings and watch how turtles lay their eggs.

First, you go to the conservation area called “Pos Monitoring Penyu Sungai Belacan Paloh WWF” which is coincided with the Paloh Turtle nesting beach in Sambas Regency. After that, you can stop at the base camp of the turtle monitoring post, there are officers who can help guests explore the area, such as hatchlings, egg planting locations, and their release. Here, you can find various other facilities such as toilets, prayer rooms, meeting places, camping areas, beaches, life jackets and so on. It is free to enter, but do remember to maintain the cleanliness and order there.

RELEASING THE HATCHLINGS

Morning or afternoon are the perfect times to release the young turtles or hatchlings that are already one day old and are ready to be released into the sea. This time is chosen because there are few predators targeting the hatchlings.

MONITORING EGG LAYING

If you want to see how turtles lay their eggs along Paloh beach, that means you have to spend the night at this Monitoring Post too as the monitoring activities are carried out at night, where the area is low light and low predatory interference. So are you interested? Come and visit the Pos Monitoring Penyu Sungai Belacan, Kecamatan Paloh, Kabupaten Sambas, Kalimantan Barat.
